The 17th Theo Quant Meetings
Reflections and Practices in Theoretical and Quantitative Geography
February 4–6, 2026
Claude-Nicolas Ledoux Center for Human and Environmental Sciences, Besançon, France
Organized by ThéMA Research Laboratory (UMR 6049 CNRS), University of Marie & Louis Pasteur, Besançon
The Théo Quant Meetings are a key event for the scientific community in theoretical and quantitative geography.
We are pleased to announce that the 17th edition will be held from February 4 to 6, 2026 in Besançon, at the Claude-Nicolas Ledoux Center for Human and Environmental Sciences, located in the heart of the historic city center, surrounded by its green setting.
The Théo Quant Meetings have always crossed the boundaries of the geographers’ and academics’ communities, welcoming all those seeking to measure and qualify the mutual influences between space and social, economic, physical and ecological processes.
In a complex, changing world where digital technologies, geolocalization and big data are widespread, analysing, modeling and giving new meanings to these data remains an ongoing challenge for geography, as it is for many other disciplines.
The Théo Quant Meetings provide an opportunity to discuss these issues across disciplines and generations, in plenary sessions, thematic sessions and workshops.
Call for papers and workshop
We invite you to take part in these exchanges by proposing a presentation. Your presentation can be integrated into one of the eight thematic sessions already planned (see Sessions and list below). The other topics of theoretical and quantitative geography will also have their place, from theoretical models to methods and tools responding to socio-ecological issues.
Two types of presentation are possible:
- A 15-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion;
- A poster presented during a specific session and submitted to a competition.
In both cases, we invite you to submit an abstract of 300 words maximum, in French or English, including 2 to 5 bibliographical references, before October 15, 2025, on the following website: https://theoquant2026.sciencesconf.org
The scientific committee will notify acceptance of proposals by october 22, 2025.
Thematic sessions:
- Understanding the dynamics of geohistorical networks: modeling their spatial and temporal dimensions
- Geography of populations
- Territorial inequalities: qualifications, production and dynamics
- Scaling laws in urban geography
- What place is given to critical theoretical and quantitative geography?
- Renewing our knowledge of agricultural systems through theoretical and quantitative geography
- Landscape structures and biodiversity dynamics
- Methods and data to analyze spatial discontinuities: understanding border and/or interface spaces
Workshops
In addition to the thematic sessions, several workshops will be held. One will be devoted to scientific software and computer tools used in theoretical and quantitative geography. If you are interested in giving a demonstration, please send an e-mail to theoquant@univ-fcomte.fr with “Atelier ThéoQuant” in the Subject field.
